Gertie’s Night Out – Caitlin Hicks in Performance

Last Friday, June 26th, GERTIE’S NIGHT OUT, my first show in five years. Small crowd, very attentive. It was wonderful to get up again onstage and share my writing, my characters, my ‘take’. In this day of cell phones, ipads and plugged in technology, there is nothing quite like sitting in a room and hearing another person speak. Listening to that person. Making eye contact.

Here are a few encouraging comments, received:

“Wonderful show, Caitlin. Completely engrossing, satisfying. You mentioned several times about how ‘nice it is to be heard’. How nice it is for me, in the audience, to hear MY own voice, MY heart in your stories.

And I think this is the magic of your writing, and performing. That I can hear my own life so clearly drawn, and felt, in yours. Super big hug. -Ben

“Hi, Caitlin. I’m so glad I decided to take in your wonderful solo performance/reading. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it; it was a very moving experience.” – Lis

“Just got in from seeing Gertie’s Night Out, at the Sechelt Arts Centre starring Caitlin Hicks who both wrote and performed a staggering one woman show. She shared humour and sober, intimate moments from her struggle growing up in a family of fourteen brothers and sisters. Caitlin transformed herself into characters with accents and intonations, without costumes, props, music or special lighting. Gertie, a physically and mentally challenged young woman stole the show when she realized, through giving birth to her own, perfect daughter, she herself was “normal”. So pleased I was able to be there.” – Shelley Harrison Rae (http://www.thewordlinklounge.blogspot.com)

So now, Canada Day tomorrow, and I’m looking for a way to make this more sustainable.
